Sending more troops to Afghanistan might cause loss of goodwill

President Barack Obama was right in voting against the Iraq War. However, he would be making a mistake by sending more troops to Afghanistan.

This will only cause more hate and violence toward the United States. The use of missiles and unmanned bombers is killing innocentcivilians and increasing hate. The killing of hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians in Iraq already has caused hate that will travel through the Middle East and the rest of the world, including our country, causing more home-grown terrorist strikes in our country.

Although approval for this war is dropping, Obama has been reported as saying he will not be persuaded by public opinion.

Public opinion is what brought the Korean and Vietnam wars to an end. This might happen with the war in Afghanistan, and our president and those in Congress who support this war might be looking for new jobs if they go against public opinion.

We already have been in the war eight years, with no end in sight, with the loss of more than 800 of our brave troops. In Iraq, we lost more than 4,300 U.S. soldiers with more than 8,000 desertions and 140 suicides in 2008 alone.. The number of suicides might increase when our troops come home with post-war stress.

Pope John Paul II said not one good thing came out of the Iraq War.

I'm afraid the same will be said of the war in Afghanistan, as violence only begets more violence. The Middle East has been in conflict since biblical times. Our government should admit the reason we are in these wars, which is oil. Trading blood for oil is too high a price for our brave troops to have to pay.

P.S. As I signed this letter, I heard Obama had been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. I feel Obama has won back some of the goodwill that President George W. Bush lost. However, if he continues to support the wars, he might cause the loss of this goodwill.
