STILLWATER, Okla. — On a night where famed Oklahoma State alums Garth Brooks and Barry Sanders were honored, the Cowboys finished the festivities with a 33-17 win over Missouri.
Senior quarterback Zac Robinson was efficient throughout the game, completing 22 passes for 227 yards and a touchdown. But it was a dominant victory in the field position battle and an ineffective Missouri offense that allowed Oklahoma State to prevail.
The Missouri defense had to defend a short field the entire second half, but managed to hold the Cowboys to just three field goals. And despite being dominated for most of the second half, a 60-yard punt return by Jasper Simmons put the Tiger offense inside the OSU 20 with just over five minutes remaining down by only two scores. But any hopes of a Tiger comeback fell to the turf with Derrick Washington as the running back was stopped short of a first down on 4th and 3.
Missouri managed some gaudy passing numbers in the first half. Sophomore quarterback Gabbert rackd up over 250 yards passing, and senior wide receiver Danario Alexander looked dominant throughout. Alexander had over 160 yards receiving on six catches, including a touchdown.
But that production was offset by the inefficiency shown in the second half. Gabbert was just 4 of 9 for 16 yards in the third quarter, and added two second-half interceptions. Alexander managed just three second half receptions for 19 yards.
With just over five minutes remaining in the third quarter it finally seemed as if Missouri had flipped the field position battle that it had been losing all night as Jasper Simmons broke down the right side of the field and made it all the way down to the OSU 10-yard line. But a holding penalty pushed the Tigers back to their own 14-yard line. Throughout the first three quarters Missouri’s average starting field position was its own 17-yard line.
The mistakes weren’t new to the second half. A drop by Wes Kemp more than 60 yards down the field with just over two minutes remaining in the second quarter allowed OSU to take a 24-17 lead into the half as Robinson connected with Hubert Anyiam for an 8-yard touchdown pass.
