CAPE GIRARDEAU — Southeast Missouri investigators believe a 15-year-old murdered along with his mother earlier this week wasn't the target of the killing.

Jamie Lynn Orman and her son, Derrick, were shot to death Tuesday morning in a Cape Girardeau home. The Southeast Missourian reported Thursday that Orman's boyfriend, John Lawrence, was the intended target.

Investigators believe Lawrence's estranged wife, 39-year-old Michelle Lawrence, asked Ryan Patterson to murder her husband and burn the home so she could collect insurance.

The 28-year-old Patterson faces multiple charges including three counts of murder, because Jamie Orman was pregnant when killed. Michelle Lawrence is charged with conspiracy to commit murder. The two did not yet have lawyers, according to electronic court records.
