COLUMBIA — No one was injured in a fire in a quadplex on the 1000 block of Wildwood Street in Boone County on Monday.

The Boone County Fire Protection District is investigating the cause of the fire.

The district responded to the fire at 9:21 p.m. after receiving a 911 call reporting heavy black smoke coming from a closet, a news release stated.

When firefighters arrived, they found heavy smoke and flames in the front window and door of the building, the release stated.

Firefighters completely extinguished the fire and were able to confirm that all occupants were out of the building.

The belongings of the two residents of the apartment with the fire were a total loss, and there was some water and smoke damage to the other three apartments, the release stated.

“The residents inside this one-room apartment were very fortunate to get out,” Division Chief Gale Blomenkamp said. “Had this fire occurred while the occupants were sleeping, this could have been much worse and possibly deadly. There were no smoke detectors inside the apartment. Once they escaped, they were able to tell everyone in the building to get out.”
