ROLLA — Rolla police are investigating the death of a 21-year-old Edgar Springs man who was struck by a freight train.

Phelps County Coroner Larry Swinfard said Tommy Lee died of blunt-force trauma after being struck Tuesday.

The southwest-bound freight train took a quarter of a mile to stop and was delayed for three hours.

Police told The Rolla Daily News that the case was under investigation even though it's believed to have been an accident.

Police said Lee was walking on the railroad ties with his back to the oncoming train when he was struck. Authorities confirmed that a stereo player with earphones was found on the ground near him.
