BRANSON WEST — After a decade of work, the Branson West Municipal Airport is officially open for business.
The new airport officially opened Tuesday when nine planes landed on the 5,000-foot-long runway.
Branson West Mayor John Rhodes said Stone County has needed the airport for years and it will provide a boost for the area's economy.
The $20-million project is owned and operated by the city of Branson West. The next phase will be erecting hangars, a maintenance and terminal facility and fuel facilities. Fuel and other services are expected to be available in February of next year.
The Branson West Municipal Airport will also be called "Emerson Field," for aviator Robert Emerson, the former owner of the property.
