ST. LOUIS — A St. Louis sheriff's deputy is recovering after he and another man were wounded at a midtown nightclub.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported Sunday that both men were listed in serious but stable condition.

The shooting happened early Saturday while 41-year-old James Buchanan was working a second job as a security officer and intervened in an argument between two men.

When Buchanan took one of the men outside, the second man followed with a gun and opened fire.

Sheriff's Department spokesman Mike Guzy says the off-duty deputy was shot before he was able to pull his pistol. He was struck in one of his hands and a leg, and an unidentified 25-year-old man was struck in the chest, abdomen and legs.

There were no immediate arrests in the case.
