Monday, January 18, 2010 | 11:27 a.m. CST

Who: Expectant mothers

What: Free prescription prenatal vitamins

Where: Schnucks pharmacies, including the location in Columbia, at 1400 Forum Blvd.

When: Now

Why: National Birth Defects Prevention Month

Economic constraints often prevent patients from filling the prescriptions for needed prenatal vitamins, said Michael Juergensmeyer, the Schnucks vice President of Pharmacy, in a news release.

Iron and folic acid, key ingredients of prenatal vitamins, inhibit the development of birth defects and reduce the chances of preterm birth.

According to the March of Dimes, 70 percent of the 3,000 brain and spinal birth defects in the U.S. each year could be prevented with the use of prenatal vitamins.
