Historical Society returns to six-day week

COLUMBIA — The State Historical Society of Missouri will be open six days a week again starting Friday.

It had been operating four days per week, but donations will keep it open Fridays and Saturdays for at least four months.

The society received more than $90,000 in donations, according to a news release.

Because of a 25 percent decrease in state funding for the 2010 fiscal year, the society has been closed on Fridays and Saturdays since Nov. 1.

The fundraising will need to continue in order for the society to remain open six days a week.

There are still no funds for the society's Missouri History Speakers' Bureau, according to the release. The four full-time positions that were eliminated over the past year will not be restored with the new funds.

The new hours of operation are 8 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday.
