Kansas City pediatric therapist faces child porn charges

Wednesday, February 24, 2010 | 5:11 p.m. CST

KANSAS CITY — A Kansas City man who worked with children at a hospital and advocated for them through a nonprofit agency is facing child pornography charges.

Federal prosecutors filed charges Tuesday against 55-year-old Michael Toal. He remains in federal custody without bond and is seeking a court-appointed attorney.

Investigators say Toal admitted inappropriate contact with at least one child while working as a pediatric respiratory therapist at University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kan.

Prosecutors say Toal came under investigation after federal agents traced child pornography on a file-sharing network to his computer in Kansas City.

Toal has also served as an advocate for abused children in the state court system.
