Stephens women's basketball team wins tournament opener

The Stephens women's basketball team won 62-53 on Monday at Harris-Stowe in the first round of the American Midwest Conference Tournament. Four players scored in the double figures for the Stars (9-19), who earned their first victory in the AMC tournament in their two seasons in the league.

Cara Leis' 17 points led Stephens, which held a 29-25 advantage at halftime. Bre McLaughlin had 14 points, Jamie Flesner scored 12, Tia LaFavor had 10 and Megan Sheffield pulled down 11 rebounds.

Benisha Mitchell led the No. 8-seeded Hornets (2-27) with 17 points.

No. 9-seed Stephens advances to play top seed William Woods at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Fulton.
