KANSAS CITY — A 10-month-old girl died and four other people were hospitalized after a small, smoldering fire filled a Kansas City house.

The Kansas City Star reports that a 4-year-old boy has been air-lifted to a burn center in Cincinnati. Kansas City Fire spokesman Joe Vitale said a 5-year-old girl is in stable condition at a Kansas City area hospital.

He said an adult male is hospitalized in critical condition, and an adult woman is in stable condition. A third adult was found in a back room unharmed.

Firefighters responded to the blaze at about 3 a.m. Monday. When they arrived, they found the fire had filled the house with a lethal combination of smoke and carbon monoxide.

The cause is under investigation.
