NEOSHO — A man from Diamond was killed and another was injured when their canoe was swept over a dam in southwest Missouri.

The Missouri State Water Patrol said 18-year-old Westly Wood died Monday afternoon near a dam in Neosho on Shoal Creek.

The water patrol said Wood and 20-year-old Houston Lietzke, also of Diamond, were caught in the undertow after their canoe went over the dam.

Neosho Fire Chief Greg Hickman said rescuers struggled for more than 30 minutes to pull Lietzke out of the water. He was taken to a Joplin hospital and treated for hypothermia.

The Joplin Globe reported that Wood's body was recovered Monday evening about 100 feet from the dam.
