LETTER: Thanks for the cleanup along Rock Quarry Road

Wednesday, March 24, 2010 | 1:17 p.m. CDT

I want to thank the very generous individuals from Alpha Phi Omega who spent their time last weekend picking up a tremendous amount of trash along scenic Rock Quarry Road. I also want to thank Mike Heimos, the city's storm water educator, Bill Cantin, of the new Office of Neighborhood Services and Sixth Ward councilwoman Barbara Hoppe who worked together to achieve the re-beautification of the old farm road.

No longer distracted by the trash, it is now possible to enjoy the canopy and vistas along the road all the way from Stadium Boulevard to Rock Bridge Memorial State Park at the Devil's Icebox. I didn't read the paper until Monday so I missed the announcement of the partial closure of the road to facilitate the clean-up. I would have been out there too. Thank you all! Now that people are trashing it again, the volume is less, and I hope I can get out there and keep up with cleaning it. Wouldn't it be nice if the few messing the place up would think twice and recycle their beer and soda and McDonalds bags? Education, education, civic pride, where art thou?
