HURLEY — A Stone County woman who had 55 dogs taken from her property has been charged with 12 counts of animal abuse.

The dogs were found during a raid March 22 on property near Hurley owned by Judy Lee Chambers, who was charged on Wednesday.

Stone County Sheriff officials said investigators found 11 dead dogs and several others that were emaciated.

The rescued dogs were taken to the Humane Society headquarters in St. Louis. The group will seek permanent custody of the animals at a hearing on March 31 in Galena.

The Springfield News-Leader reports that Chambers is scheduled to appear in court on April 20 on the animal abuse charges.
