Candidate for Columbia Board of Education, 3-year term
Jan Mees is a retired media specialist who spent 21 years working in Columbia Public Schools. She has served as president of the Columbia School Board for the past year and has served on the board since 2007.
Mees’ biggest goals if elected are to close the academic achievement gap that exists between students of different races and household income levels and balance the district budget. She said her experiences in the district and on the board have made her able to look at issues from both teacher and board member perspectives and make difficult decisions.
