Jim Whitt is a retired General Electric executive and has served on the Columbia School Board since he was appointed last June to fill a vacant position previously held by Rosie Tippin.
If elected, Whitt’s biggest goals include closing the academic achievement gap that exists between students of different races and ethnicities and household income levels and ensure students and faculty have appropriate facilities. He believes in a bottoms-up approach in which teacher involvement is necessary to close the gap. Whitt supports the bond issue, also on the April 6 ballot, that would bring in $120 million for construction and building maintenance projects for the district.
