LETTER: Skala's integrity stands in contrast to opposition

Wednesday, March 31, 2010 | 4:28 p.m. CDT; updated 5:03 p.m. CDT, Wednesday, March 31, 2010

As a longtime resident of the Benton-Stephens neighborhood, where diversity is our strength, I wholeheartedly endorse the re-election of Karl Skala for a much deserved second term on the Columbia City Council.

I do so because I applaud Skala's conscientious efforts to create a more accessible, accountable city government. I admire his hardworking, well-reasoned, common sense approach to city issues. I value his honest, informed and enlightened public presence on the council. He is a responsible, independent-minded, nationally recognized, grassroots leader for all of Columbia's citizens, not merely "the powers that be." Finally, I respect Karl's personal integrity in contrast to the shameless, mean-spirited campaign being waged against him by his opposition.

Therefore, I appeal to all of my diverse, open-minded, Third Ward neighbors to turn out April 6 to make a statement and proclaim your support for this decent and highly deserving candidate: Karl Skala.

Peter Byger lives in the Third Ward.
