LETTER: Skala's training benefits all

In a town that is home to two colleges and a university, I find it incomprehensible that Third Ward Councilman Karl Skala would be criticized for attending educational seminars, training programs and conferences. For example, Skala attended threee National League of Cities leadership training programs and each time was recognized for achievement in leadership excellence. He has also attended Smart Growth conferences. Furthermore, Skala has taken advantage of training programs in Columbia. To become more informed about public safety, he graduated from the Columbia Police Department's Citizens Academy in 2009 and attended the Taser certification program in 2008 and 2009. Our returns are well worth the investment. The knowledge and skills gained have improved Skala's ability to help govern the city and benefit all. Decisions made by the Columbia City Council have a major impact on our quality of life. We need a well-informed council. We need to re-elect Karl Skala.
