Multiple accidents slam eastbound I-70

COLUMBIA — Emergency crews responded to six traffic accidents late Friday afternoon on Interstate 70 near Columbia. All occurred within the span of an hour and less than five miles apart.

The series of accidents stopped traffic around mile marker 130.

“It doesn’t appear that any injuries were life threatening, but we did transport some from the earlier accidents,” said Columbia Fire Department Battalion Chief Steven Sapp.

Sapp said the amount of accidents within minutes of each other created some confusion, especially because some occurred while teams were on their way to other accidents.

“It was just a matter of making sure we’ve arrived at the correct crash,” Sapp said. “But the dispatchers are pretty good at giving vehicle descriptions.”
