CAPE GIRARDEAU — A 61-year-old Cape Girardeau man faces charges for allegedly shooting and killing a dog tied up in its own yard.

The Southeast Missourian reported that Morrie Lee Carwile is charged with misdemeanor animal abuse for shooting a pit bull that had reportedly attacked Carwile's Great Pyrenees.

Carwile is also charged with tampering with physical evidence for hiding a gun from police.

Authorities said Carwile's daughter took the Great Pyrenees for a walk. The dog got off his leash and walked to the property where the pit bull was chained to a fence, and the dogs fought.

Carwile told police that by the time he arrived, the fighting had stopped, but he shot the pit bull because it lunged at him.
