CLAYTON — All patrol and specialized unit officers for the St. Louis County Police Department will be equipped with a stun gun by the end of this month. Every time they use the device, they will be required to call an ambulance.
The department announced Thursday that a federal grant will allow for the purchase of an additional 312 Taser stun guns, bringing the number of officers equipped with the devices to 600. Each device costs about $1,000.
Chief Tim Finch said the county department began using stun guns in 2004. Since then, the use of force has decreased by 38 percent, suspect injuries have decreased 19 percent and injuries to officers have declined 37 percent.
