COLUMBIA — Rookie firefighter Samantha Lamp, 23, is the only woman of seven recruits hired by the Columbia Fire Department in the past year and a half. Lamp seems at ease in the male-dominated environment. Although her homemade chocolate chip cookies are a hit among her fellow firefighters, the traditionally feminine stuff takes a back seat to Lamp’s passion for firefighting.

Lamp said the ominous majesty of wildfire season inspired her to frequently volunteer for the Boone County Fire Protection District. While studying conservation at MU, Lamp realized her true calling was to fight fires full time.

As far as her future is concerned, Lamp said she is secure with her career path.

“I feel confident and plan on staying in it until I retire,” she said. “I feel I was in the career I was meant to be in.”
