Cleanup Columbia volunteers may be picking in the rain

COLUMBIA — Organizers of Cleanup Columbia want volunteers who have signed up for the event to know it will be held on Saturday regardless of the weather.

Leigh Britt, a volunteer coordinator for the city of Columbia, said the 222 groups of volunteers that registered are encouraged to pick up litter between 8:30 and 1 p.m. Saturday rather than reschedule.

Inclement weather was forecast to continue into the weekend, with a chance of showers and thunderstorms on Saturday.

After their shift, volunteers leave filled trash bags on the side of road for Columbia Public Works employees to pick up. When groups reschedule, city workers have a harder time keeping track of where trash needs to be picked up and the bags become eyesores, Britt said.

More than 2,000 volunteers have registered to pick up litter and remove graffiti in the city. Volunteers will be provided with a free lunch at the Twin Lakes Recreation Area at noon.

Anyone interested in volunteering for the event can do so by registering online or by calling the city's Volunteer Program at (573) 874-7504.
