INDEPENDENCE — The pastor of an Independence church that was searched last week in a homicide investigation has resigned.

New Hope Baptist Church on Sunday announced David Love's resignation on its website, days after police served a search warrant at the church.

Investigators are looking into the death of 42-year-old Randy Stone, who was found shot to death March 31 inside his Independence insurance office.

The Kansas City Star reports that Stone was active in the church and at one time had operated one of its Sunday school routes. Independence police would not comment about whether they believe Love had anything to do with Stone's death.

Stone was married and had two children.

A phone number for the former pastor could not be found. He has declined comment to area media.
