Nixon names Republican senator's son to MSU board

JEFFERSON CITY — Gov. Jay Nixon has tapped the son of a Missouri Republican senator to fill a nonvoting student position on the Missouri State University governing board.

A Senate committee was expected to consider the appointment of Brandt Shields on Wednesday. He is the oldest son of Senate President Pro Tem Charlie Shields of St. Joseph. Charlie Shields leads the committee that will consider the appointment and is sponsoring his son's nomination.

Brandt Shields is a junior at Missouri State University in Springfield. He is a musical theater major and a member of the school's student government association. His term would last until Dec. 31, 2011.

The legislative session ends Friday.
