Residents may now submit applications for Columbia boards and commissions

COLUMBIA — Applications for several boards and commissions will be accepted at the city clerk’s office, 701 E. Broadway, until noon Friday, June 4. Applications are available at the clerk’s office or on the city’s website.

The following boards and commissions have openings:

Board of Health

  • One vacancy
  • Term expires Aug. 31, 2010.
  • Monthly meetings are held the second Thursday of each month at 5:30 p.m.

Board of Mechanical Examiners

  • One vacancy
  • Term to expires June 17, 2011.
  • Member must be a general contractor not in the HVAC business and must be a resident of the city of Columbia.
  • Monthly meetings are held the second Tuesday of each month at 5 p.m.

Building Construction Codes Commission

  • Two vacancies for alternate members (to serve in the absence of a regular member).
  • Terms expire Aug. 1, 2010.
  • Positions open for the following categories: professional engineer with experience in electrical/mechanical engineering and a master plumber.
  • Monthly meetings are held the fourth Monday of each month at 4:30 p.m.

Community Development Commission

  • One vacancy
  • Term expires Nov. 1, 2011.
  • Member must be a qualified voter and resident of Ward 5 and shall not serve on the board of directors or be employed by any agency which applies for funding through the commission or which receives funding upon recommendation of the commission.

Comprehensive Plan Task Force

  • One vacancy
  • Consideration will be given to prior involvement in the visioning process, service on a city commission, professional credentials or participation in a civic, business or professional organization.
  • Monthly meetings are held on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Cultural Affairs Standing Committee on Public Art

  • One vacancy
  • Term expires July 1, 2013.
  • Member must be an artist.

Library District Board

  • Three vacancies to be appointed by the mayor
  • Terms expire June 30, 2013.
  • Members must reside within the Columbia Library District and shall hold no other office or position in city government.
  • Monthly meetings are held the first Thursday of each month.

Mayor’s Committee on Physical Fitness

  • One vacancy to be appointed by the mayor
  • Term expires Nov. 30, 2012.
  • Monthly meetings are held as needed; quarterly meetings are held the first Tuesday of the designated month at 12:30 p.m.

Parks and Recreation Commission

  • One vacancy
  • Term expires May 31, 2013.
  • Member must be a qualified voter and resident of the Third Ward.
  • Monthly meetings are held the third Thursday of each month at 7 p.m.

Public Communications Resource Advisory Committee

  • One vacancy
  • Term expires Dec. 31, 2010.
  • Member must be a qualified voter and resident of the city of Columbia and must be experienced in the field of communications, citizenship or management of not-for-profit organizations. The member must not be a paid officer or employee of the city, nor serve on the board of directors or be employed by any entity that applies for funding through the committee or which receives funding upon recommendation of the committee.
  • Monthly meetings are held the fourth Thursday of each month at 4 p.m.

Railroad Advisory Board

  • Three vacancies
  • Terms expire July 15, 2014.
  • Members must have knowledge and interest in either railroad, shipping, transportation or business, and shall be sympathetic with the principle of municipal ownership and operation of branch line railroads. One member must also represent a business or firm that routinely ships or receives goods or raw materials over said branch line.
  • Monthly meetings are held the second Thursday of each month at 7:30 a.m.

Source Water Protection Plan Task Force

  • Four vacancies
  • Consideration will be given to prior service on a city board or commission, professional credentials or participation in a civic, business or professional organization.

Storm Water Advisory Commission

  • Four vacancies
  • Terms expire one and two years after appointment.
  • Members must be qualified voters and residents of the city for at least one year prior to appointment and be sympathetic with the principle of municipal storm water management that ensures sound and efficient management of the system.

Substance Abuse Advisory Commission

  • One vacancy
  • Term expires Oct. 31, 2011.
  • Member must be a health care professional and have a demonstrated interest in and concern for substance and alcohol abuse problems in the community.
  • Monthly meetings are held on the second Wednesday of each month at noon.

Water and Light Advisory Board

  • One vacancy
  • Term expires June 30, 2014.
  • Member must be sympathetic with the principal of municipal operation of the water and light system and a qualified voter and resident of the city for at least one year prior to appointment.
  • Monthly meetings are held on the first Tuesday of each month at 8 a.m.
