COLUMBIA — Two residents had to vacate their house on Bethel Church Road after a Volkswagen Beetle crashed into it Wednesday morning.
The Beetle, driven by 21-year-old Columbia resident Monica Witherspoon, skidded through a stop sign at the intersection of Hoedown Drive, across Bethel Church Road and through a ditch before crashing into the front of the house at 5735 Bethel Church Road, according to a news release from the Boone County Sheriff's Department.
The crash occurred at 3:48 a.m. Wednesday. The car hit the front wall of the brick house, and the wall was dislodged from the rest of the structure.
In addition to Witherspoon, one passenger was in the car at the time of the crash. No one in the car or the house was injured during the crash, said Brian Leer, a sergeant with the Sheriff's Department. One adult and one child were displaced from the house until the wall can be repaired, he said.
Witherspoon was arrested on suspicion of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated, resisting a lawful detention and careless and imprudent driving involving an accident, the news release stated. Each charge carries a $500 bond. Witherspoon was still being held on bond at the time of the news release Wednesday morning, Leer said.
The Boone County Sheriff's Department had previously arrested Witherspoon on suspicion of being intoxicated as a minor in 2009. Witherspoon was sentenced to probation and a $100 fine following that arrest.
