COLUMBIA — A flash flood watch will begin Wednesday evening and last through Friday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.

Showers and thunderstorms will move into the central portion of Missouri on Wednesday afternoon. Heavier rainfall overnight and into Thursday will accumulate an average of an inch and a half of rain by Friday, said Benjamin Sipprell, weather service meteorologist in St. Louis.

With soil saturated from the three inches of rain from the last nine days, runoff may flood local streams, creeks and rivers. The Missouri River is already significantly high, Sipprell said.

The weather service encourages people in the watch area to be prepared for the possibility of a flash flood.
