COLUMBIA — Two members of the Boone County Fire Protection District collided Monday, and one of the drivers sustained severe injuries.

John Herman, 25, and Keith Null, 22, both of Columbia, were in a two-vehicle collision at 7:12 a.m. Monday at Wester Lane and southeast I-70 Drive, Public Information Officer Jessie Haden said.

Herman was driving a red Ford F-150, and Null was driving a black 1998 Chevrolet Camaro, Haden said. The vehicles collided and were upright on the center of the roadway, according to the release.

Units of the Columbia Fire Department and the Fire District were called to the scene. Null was trapped in his vehicle because of heavy damage on the driver’s side door. Herman was found trying to help Null when the firefighters arrived, according to the release.

Crews freed Null within 20 minutes using specialized hydraulic equipment. He was transported to University Hospital as a class-one trauma.

There were no other major injuries related to the accident.
