LETTER: Senate bill will make our nation energy independent

Friday, May 28, 2010 | 12:01 a.m. CDT

As an Iraq veteran and a current member of the Army Reserve, I am pleased to hear that comprehensive energy legislation known as the Clean Energy Jobs and American Power Act has been introduced in the U.S. Senate. I recognize that our country is currently at a crossroad. We can stay the course, allowing our economy to remain stagnant, or we can change direction, spur the creation of American jobs and move away from energy sources that threaten our national security. I support the Clean Energy Jobs and American Power Act because it aims to put Americans back to work and defund the foreign regimes that support terrorism.

For every moment we delay investment in a clean-energy economy, our country loses out on hundreds of thousands of jobs to other countries who see the growth potential and who aren’t hesitating on cashing in. For every moment we delay, China is another step closer to cornering the fastest growing industrial sector and Iran has additional funds to build the explosives that are killing our soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan. Our economy and national security can’t wait any longer.

There is no silver-bullet solution, but the Clean Energy Jobs and American Power Act is a silver buckshot, all-of-the-above approach that we can’t afford not to take. I encourage my U.S. senators to stand by the sponsors of this bill in the next couple of months to foster the passage of this crucial legislation. I encourage Sens. Kit Bond and Claire McCaskill to stand up for hardworking Americans and our troops.

First off, as an intern at the EDF I’d like to thank you for serving our country and protecting our freedoms. Also, I couldn’t agree with you more, the Clean Energy Jobs and American Power Act is extremely important to our nation. As President Obama mentioned last week, “Fifteen years ago, the United States produced 40 percent of the world’s solar panels -- 40 percent. That was just 15 years ago. By 2008, our share had fallen to just over 5 percent”. We cannot afford to let the American Power Act fail; it is crucial that our nation become the leader in providing alternative energy sources, whether solar, or nuclear power. Let’s get behind this policy and allow our future generations the protection they deserve. To keep updated check out: lesscarbonmorejobs.org
