Stolen iPhone leads to assault

COLUMBIA – Police said a teenager was assaulted Thursday after attempting to chase down someone who stole his iPhone.

The 15-year-old was walking down Providence Road when an unknown person took the iPhone from his pocket, Columbia Police Sgt. Dan Beckman said. The victim chased the person for a while and threatened to hunt him down, Beckman said.

Aaron Harris, 17, heard the threat and was offended, Beckman said.

Harris, 17, confronted the victim and dragged him into oncoming traffic where the teenager was nearly struck, Beckman said. Harris later jumped onto the teen, hit him and kicked him several times in the head before running from the area, Beckman said.

Beckman said the victim knew Harris’ nickname, which led police to 205 Hickman Ave. to arrest Harris on suspicion of second-degree assault.
