BLACK JACK — A consumer fraud investigator for the Missouri attorney general's office and another man have died during an apparent robbery attempt in the town of Black Jack.

St. Louis County Police identified the dead Sunday as 47-year-old Tyrone L. Thompson and 18-year-old Jakeem Hicks.

Besides working for the attorney general's office, Thompson previously served as the police chief for the town of Pagedale.

Police said in a news release that it appears that Thompson was sitting in his sport utility vehicle late Saturday waiting to pick up a friend when two men tried to rob him. Police said Thompson became involved in an exchange of gunfire.

Another unidentified man also was wounded in the shooting.

Police are asking the public for tips.
