HAZELWOOD — St. Louis County Police Chief Tim Fitch said undercover officers acted appropriately during a running gun battle earlier this week in Pine Lawn.

KMOX Radioreported Fitch made the comments Wednesday in response to criticism from Pine Lawn Police Chief Daniel O'Connor, who said he should have been told that undercover officers would be in his town. O'Connor also said his officers almost fired on the county officers, not knowing they were working undercover.

Fitch said that because of the nature of St. Louis County, with dozens of municipalities next to each other, it would be virtually impossible to alert local police every time a county officer is passing through.

Fitch said the undercover officers were on a drug bust at the time of the gun battle.
