Elks Lodge to celebrate Flag Day with Sunday ceremony

Friday, June 11, 2010 | 4:54 p.m. CDT

COLUMBIA — The Columbia Elks Lodge will hold its annual Flag Day celebration at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Elks Lodge, 4747 E. Elk Park Drive.

Boy Scout Troop 4 will present the eight U.S. flags and an Elks Lodge member will present the Elk flag. Flag Day committee chairman Russell Williams said he is working on finding a veteran, possibly an ex-prisoner of war, to present the P.O.W. flag.

The history of the flag and a response to the history will be recited, and there will be a ceremony for the Elks Lodge officers.

The Elks Lodge has recognized June 14 as Flag Day since 1907. President Harry S. Truman, an Elks Lodge member, made it a national holiday in 1949.
