Wind knocks down tree at Broadway and College Avenue

COLUMBIA — Strong winds during a storm on Saturday caused a tree near the corner of Broadway and College Avenue to fall, blocking the sidewalk and one lane of traffic.

The tree fell shortly before 3 p.m., said Jay Erickson, a security officer. Traffic was not stopped, and there were no markers in the road to warn vehicles. Erickson was on the scene and said the police were directing traffic earlier but were called away.

Erickson had contacted maintenance for cleanup. He said it would be cleaned up as soon as possible.

"There is an extra hazard because it's blocking the sidewalk," Erickson said.
