ST. LOUIS — A worker is hospitalized in critical condition after falling 30 feet down a dark elevator shaft in St. Louis.

The accident happened Wednesday at the Lemp Brewery site. KSDK-TV reports the 28-year-old worker stepped into a dark elevator but the platform wasn't there. He fell about three stories.

Witnesses say the man was conscious when emergency crews arrived.

Fire Capt. Michael Pickett says a malfunction allowed the elevator doors to open. He says they should not open if the platform isn't there.

Authorities say the man was installing communications wiring.

City building inspectors are investigating.
