COLUMBIA — Space pandas will be seeking their revenge Saturday night in Columbia at the opening performance at the Stephens Lake Park Amphitheater.

The amphitheater is scheduled to open to the public with two performance groups starting at 6:30 p.m. Saturday.

About the amphitheater

  •   The amphitheater is estimated to cost $45,000 — $20,250 from a Land and Water Conservation Fund grant award and a city grant of $24,750.
  • It will hold an estimated 500 to 1,000 people.
  • The stage is set to be 60-by-60 feet.

The first performance is "The Revenge of the Space Pandas," put on by the Maplewood Barn Community Theater. The Columbia Community Band is scheduled perform immediately after.

The new amphitheater is the last funded project to be completed for Stephens Lake Park. Other projects that were previously completed include waterfalls and spraygrounds.

The amphitheater construction is not entirely finished. Park Development Superintendent Steve Saitta said some work still needs to be done on the orchestra pit, concrete walkways, site lighting and on some landscaping, but he said the construction is far enough along to where the grand opening can still happen.
