NAACP critical of some St. Louis County police

ST. LOUIS — The St. Louis County branch of the NAACP says county police should take over policing of many smaller communities.

St. Louis County includes dozens of towns. County police cover unincorporated areas of the county and towns without their own departments. But county Police Chief Tim Fitch has been critical of the lack of professionalism in some smaller departments.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported Friday that the NAACP has formally sided with Fitch. The organization's leaders say in a letter that county takeover of police duties in unspecified smaller communities would boost professionalism.
