Missouri Sen. McCaskill: Rural areas need broadband

Friday, June 25, 2010 | 8:54 a.m. CDT

TROY — Sen. Claire McCaskill says access to broadband is no longer a luxury; it's a necessity.

The Democrat and Federal Communications Commission Chairman Julius Genachowski are scheduled to host a forum on Friday in Troy to discuss the need for broadband Internet access in rural Missouri.

McCaskill says expansion of broadband can strengthen rural communities, create economic opportunities and improve the standard of living.

The FCC unveiled a sweeping proposal to overhaul broadband policy in March, with the goal of providing high-speed Internet access to underserved areas of the country and to make existing connections even faster.

Genachowski has said the broadband plan is his top priority.
