Baby giraffe at Springfield zoo dies

SPRINGFIELD — A female giraffe born at the Springfield zoo earlier this week has died.

The Dickerson Park Zoo said in a news release Saturday that the baby giraffe died overnight Friday.

The Springfield News-Leader reported that the baby was born at the zoo Wednesday, but it struggled with standing and nursing.

The zoo took the calf and its mother, Cheka, out of public view so staff could provide more intensive care to the baby giraffe. The calf appeared to be improving Friday, but its condition worsened again overnight.

The zoo said it would conduct tests to help understand the cause of death.
