Herculaneum chief pushes for I-55 speed camera

HERCULANEUM — Days after the St. Louis suburb Charlack placed a speed camera on Interstate 170, the police chief in another town in the region wants one on Interstate 55.

Herculaneum Police Chief Chris Pigg also wants a speed camera on nearby U.S. 61-67. He told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch he will present the idea to aldermen at a meeting on July 26.

Herculaneum would become the third town in the St. Louis area with a speed camera. St. Ann added one in a school zone earlier this year.

Critics say state officials should determine where cameras are installed so that municipalities don't use them simply to generate revenue. Pigg says his goal is to increase safety.
