Storms leave mess in St. Louis area

Thursday, July 22, 2010 | 9:46 a.m. CDT

ST. LOUIS — The St. Louis area is cleaning up after the latest round of strong storms brought heavy rain to the region.

The storms hit Wednesday evening, temporarily shutting down Interstate 70 in East St. Louis, Ill. The north St. Louis County town of Wellston and other neighboring communities had dozens of homes with water in the basement or other damage from the rush of water.

By Thursday, several residents were finding shelter elsewhere as their homes were damaged or deemed unsafe.

Several water rescues were necessary during the storm. There were no immediate reports of injuries.

The storm in St. Louis followed storms and heavy rain earlier in the week in northeast Missouri. A Louisiana, Mo., woman died Tuesday while swimming in a rain-swollen creek.
