KANSAS CITY — A dog attack at a home in Kansas City has left a 4-year-old boy hospitalized with critical injuries.

Police said they were investigating what caused the dog to attack the child and who was in the house with his mother when he was attacked overnight.

The Kansas City Star reports that the child's mother told police she woke up early Sunday because the dogs were barking. She found two Rottweilers surrounding her son, with at least one dog biting him.

She picked up her child and called for help from a neighbor's home.

The boy had bite marks over his body, and is listed in critical, but stable condition.

Police said the dogs were taken away by animal control officers.
