Miller County standoff ends in man's death

Sunday, August 1, 2010 | 7:02 p.m. CDT

JEFFERSON CITY — A central Missouri man apparently killed himself after a standoff with law enforcement officers that last more than 30 hours.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol said officers found 38-year-old Charles Knaebel inside his rural Eldon home Saturday.

The patrol said Knaebel had been barricaded in his home since Thursday evening. Knaebel's two children were with him in the home during the standoff.

Patrol officers had surrounded the home and communicated with Knaebel several times during the standoff, which ended after the two children removed from the home about noon Saturday.

The Jefferson City News-Tribune reported that Knaebel stopped communicating with officers. The authorities then went into the home and found Knaebel's body inside the home.

The patrol said it was unclear if the children witnessed the apparent suicide.
