Polar bear makes debut at KC zoo

Saturday, August 7, 2010 | 7:34 p.m. CDT

KANSAS CITY — The Kansas City Zoo has a new resident — and a new exhibit.

Nikita, a 750-pound polar bear, took a dip in a 140,000-gallon pool in front of a crowd on Saturday. The Kansas City Star reports that zoo visitors could watch the polar bear swim from above and below through glass panels.

Saturday was a preview opening of the zoo's $11 million polar bear exhibit. The official opening is Sunday.
