LETTER: ARC aerobics class meets need, merits more resources

Thursday, August 12, 2010 | 8:25 p.m. CDT

I am a 72 year old senior who has the privilege of membership at the ARC, a wonderful place to help those of us on the other side of 50 strive to maintain good health. With this privilege, I am able to attend a class, Silver Sneakers. We do aerobics and work with bands, balls and weights.

We occupy three areas on the lower level. Today, one-third of our space was rented out. We stuffed 36 of us into two-thirds of our usual space.

I try to come to class early in order to find a space near our one fan. We sometimes get to have more fans if someone from our class goes to the spinning room to retrieve more fans after their class is finished. The spinning class might have as many as eight people, yet they have four fans.

Today our leader Jackie had to retrieve our bands from some other space in the building. Jackie is a well-trained, enthusiastic leader who knows how to safely work us. She always emphasizes correct form.

ARC membership allows us to attend this class without additional cost. Two non-ARC members have their fee paid by their health insurance.

We had 36 exercisers today. Eighteen of those Silver Sneakers joined the ARC specifically in order to attend this class. Certainly those numbers merit space, fans and equipment.

Barbara Robinson lives in Columbia.
