Power outage in north Columbia affects Columbia Mall, up to 4,000 homes

COLUMBIA — Transformer problems caused up to 4,000 customers to lose power this morning, including part of the Columbia Mall.

Panera Bread was the only location at the mall open at the time of the outage, so business was not majorly affected, Operations Manager Chuck Archer said. Affected parts of the mall have already regained power.

There are still some homes without power; it should be restored to most customers within the hour, said Columbia Water and Light Director Tad Johnsen.

The loss was a result of protective mechanisms put in place to take a transformer out of service when a possible problem is detected, Johnsen said. To fix the outage, workers will first try to re-route customers back into service before investigating further into why a transformer was taken out of service.
