ST. JOSEPH — A northwest Missouri woman has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for killing her newborn son.

Twenty-year-old Heather Thompson of St. Joseph received the sentence Thursday after pleading guilty to voluntary manslaughter in the death of Collin Rissler.

The St. Joseph News-Press reports that Thompson hid her pregnancy from family and friends and gave birth May 11 in a bathroom at the home of the baby's paternal grandparents.

She admitted hitting the baby's head on the bathtub shortly after the birth.

Buchanan County prosecutor Dwight Scroggins said the newborn died of multiple injuries, including a fractured skull.
