Two missing Columbia children located

Friday, August 20, 2010 | 2:44 p.m. CDT

COLUMBIA — Doulton Drive was full of ambulances, firetrucks and rescue teams in orange and yellow vests after two children went missing Friday morning and were found later.

The Boone County Fire District and Sheriff’s Department formed a search party of about 20 people and did grid searches in the northeast of town, but ultimately, the children were never in danger, Division Chief Gale Blomenkamp said.

Ian, 10, and Abel McGeorge, 9, waited for their bus in the morning, not knowing their school, Alpha Hart Lewis Elementary, was cancelled due to a power outage Thursday night. A neighbor and friend of the mother picked them up, intending to help, but when mother Monica McGeorge came home to look for them, she couldn’t find her children anywhere.

McGeorge was visibly distraught and thankful when her children returned.

“I’m glad there was a happy ending. I know a lot of people don’t have that,” she said.
